What is OHILS (Out of Hospital Immediate Life Support) RQF?

The OHILS (Out of Hospital Immediate Life Support)Qualsafe qualification is suitable for people who will respond to out-of-hospital emergencies or life-threatening incidents. The objective of the qualification is to benefit learners by developing their knowledge and skills associated with providing Immediate Life Support to patients in cardiorespiratory arrest or experiencing life-threatening illness and injury.

Learners who have successfully completed the QA Level 4 Certificate in First Response Emergency Care (RQF)) or a similar qualification, are required to complete the OHILS course annually, as well as a CPD portfolio, to keep their FREC 4/FREC 5 valid.

Professional Pathways

Immediate Life Support is required to be taken annually by all clinicians who hold a FREC 4 or the higher qualification FREC 5 as part of their ongoing continuous professional development (CPD). 

It will develop learners’ knowledge of the three stages of immediate life support:

    • Recognise and treat the deteriorating patient using the ABCDE approach.t
    • Identify the causes and promote the prevention of cardiopulmonary arrest.
    • Undertake the skills of quality CPR and defibrillation (manual and /or AED) and simple airway manoeuvres.

    Immediate Life Support Skills Framework

    This qualification forms part of the Qualsafe Prehospital Care suite of qualifications. The qualification and learning outcomes are based on the recommendations of:

    • Resuscitation Council (UK)
    • UK Ambulance Service Clinical Practice Guidelines

    Successful learners will receive a personalised Qualsafe Level 4 Award in Immediate Life Support (RQF) e-Certificate.

    Immediate Life Support Skills Framework

    Annual requalification of Immediate Life Support is required to validate the Qualsafe Awards FREC 4 and FREC 5.

    Course Overview and Learning Outcomes

    Duration: 1 Day

    Effective early interventions by emergency care providers have been shown to have a positive impact on patient outcomes experiencing cardiorespiratory arrest or life-threatening illness and are reflected in the qualification content.

    The syllabus includes:

    • Be able to safely use and maintain emergency care equipment.
    • Be able to implement methods and procedures to assess and manage an incident.
    • Be able to diagnose, assess and manage patients with life-threatening and non-lifethreatening illness and injury.
    • Be able to implement methods and procedures to manage a patient’s airway.
    • Be able to carry out immediate life support.
    • Understand resuscitation decision making processes and procedures.
    • Know how to manage a patient with a suspected major illness

    Entry Criteria

    OHILS (Out of Hospital Immediate Life Support) can also be completed by clinicians with FREC 4 or equivalent; however, these must be mapped against the Learning Outcomes and Assessment Criteria of the Qualsafe Level 4 Certificate in First Response Emergency Care (RQF) and submitted to Qualsafe Awards for consideration.

    Learners must be at least 18 years of age at the start of the training.
